Hey Dancers!
We’re starting with a story… I had just started a new crossword puzzle.
One clue immediately caught my eye “Mack the Knife Singer.” My first thought was Bobby Darin (ding ding ding! Darin is the correct answer to 67 down, 5 letters).
The song immediately got stuck in my head so I searched my music library for “Mack the Knife.” I have about 10 versions of this song and most of them by Ella Fitzgerald. Which leads me to our….
Song of the Month
No surprises, it’s Ella Fitzgerald’s rendition of “Mack the Knife” sung live in Berlin from the 1960s. Since that fated crossword puzzle day, I’ve had her voice in my head for days. So clean, clear, and melodic.
So, who was Mack the knife? Mack the Knife is a character from a Medieval story-ballad about a highwayman. The lyrics and modern version of the song come from “The Threepenny Opera” in 1928. In 1959 Bobby Darin sang the song and it became a #1 hit (hence the crossword puzzle answer).
