Hola Dancers!
I made it to Spain! We’re living the next year in Ourense, Galicia. These first two weeks have been filled with apartment hunting, exploring the city, practicing my Spanish, walking on the river, and training in aerial circus arts (my other favorite movement style). Soon, I’ll meet some of the dancers in the nearby cities. But first, we have to finish all our legal paperwork for our visa, since Spain has a very strict timeline.
Do you remember the video inspiration from last month? I shared Groovie Movie featuring dancers Jean Phelps-Veloz and Arthur Walsh. Sadly, on January 14th, Jean Veloz passed away at the golden age of 98. You can read more about her incredible life here. If you’re interested, consider donating to the Jean Veloz Legacy Project to create a lasting memorial to Jean in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
Video Inspiration
I found this mini documentary on Jean Veloz on YouTube. It’s long, but worth a watch (or at least a good skim). It’s full of interviews, movie clips, and has a wealth of historical context on the style of Los Angeles dancing in the 1940s and beyond.
Don’t miss Jean’s advice at 19:54. It’s my favorite part of the documentary.

One more video, just because it’s so darn cute. Here’s Jean dancing at the age of 95!!! I mean, seriously, she’s a legend.

Song of the Month
One of Jean Veloz’s most famous dance scenes is from the 1943 movie “Swing Fever.” She dances to “One Girl and Two Boys” while literally dancing with two leaders. You can watch the full original movie clip here.
I really like the modern recording of One Girl and Two Boys” by Mint Julep Jazz Band. It’s peppy and a favorite at Balboa dance events. Laura Windley’s vocals are so clear yet playful. Give it a listen and get ready to tap those feet.
