Hola Dancers!
I spent part of yesterday packing for MY FIRST DANCE EVENT IN 3 YEARS! That’s a crazy sentence I never thought I would say. I haven’t had this much time off between events since my first big dance event in 2009.
Next month, my husband and I are going to the Sitges Balboa Festival. I am so excited (and also incredibly nervous/anxious/worried/all the feels) for the event. Yes, it’s very early to pack but I chose to bring tiny bag for the airline requirements and I need to make sure I can actually do it. Stay tuned for next newsletter and I’ll let you know how the event (and packing) goes!
Video Inspiration
Since I’m preparing for a Balboa event, I’ve been watching some of the most recent videos from other Bal events. Gotta keep up with the times. It’s great to see familiar faces and some new ones in the 2023 contest videos. I particularly like this video from Hot Rhythm Holiday in Austin, Texas.
It strikes a bit of nostalgia since I know all these dancers personally (they’re all lovely people). I love how uniquely each couple dances and of course the inside joke of the comb. Watch it.. the whole thing starts with Jennifer Lee.
I can’t wait to get onto the dance floor myself.

Song of the Month
On the theme of Balboa, an iconic song for Balboa is Chick Webb’s “Go Harlem”. Sound familiar? It’s the song that Jennifer Barnett and Matt Mitchell dance to in the Video Inspiration up above.
This song is super popular for dance contests and social dances. The rhythms and melody just ask us to play with the song.
