Hola Dancers!
Today, I’m on my way to the Valencia Balboa Festival for 2 nights of social dancing, a contest, and my first time exploring this sunny city on the Mediterranean! I also plan to drink some vermouth with my new dance friends that I met at Sitges Balboa Festival.
I’ll report back next month on all the fun!
Video Inspiration
Al Minns and Leon James were two iconic dancers of the Jazz era. They were part of Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers, danced at the Savoy Ballroom, and helped shape the roots of Lindy Hop and Swing dancing. This video is a compilation of excerpts from Jazz Dance, a short film by Roger Tilton in 1954. It’s an excellent showcase of their individual styles.
I particularly love Al Minns’ spin at 1:23. What’s your favorite moment?

Song of the Month
I always love a good Soundie! It’s a great way to connect what you hear with what you see. In this video of “Let Me Off Uptown” notice the metal hat mutes the trumpets use at 0:23.
This song has playful riffing between Anita O’Day and Roy Eldridge before the main vocal section. Also, check out Gene Krupa’s stylistic drumming. He’s a legend.
