Hey Dancers!
My feet are still recovering from a wonderful long weekend at Sitges Balboa Beach Festival. I had an absolutely wonderful time dancing Balboa, eating tapas, and catching up with some long-time friends.
Song of the Month
“Swingtime in the Rockies” by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra is a favorite of many Balboa dancers. The popular version recorded on June 15, 1936 is arranged by Jimmy Mundy.
Now, here’s where I went down a very long rabbit hole with this song. The original song was called “Take it Easy” and was composed by Jimmy Mundy for Earl Hines in 1933. When Jimmy Mundy began working with Benny Goodman in 1936, he took many of his charts with him. Goodman changed the title “Take it Easy” to “Swingtime in the Rockies” and it became a huuuuuuuge hit for his band.
I’ve barely scratched the surface regarding all the information on this song. If you want to learn more, check out this website.
Give the song a listen. It has so many distinctive riffs and solos. The song is a perfect conversation between brass and reeds.

Video Inspiration
Chester Whitmore is a legend in the Jazz dance community. He’s also a world renowned choreographer for many Hollywood movies and music videos. He’s been dancing since 1974.
I’ve been lucky enough to take his classes (in NYC and at Herräng Dance Camp). Not only is he an amazing teacher with the most creative routines, he’s the nicest and funniest person.
I have two videos for you featuring Chester. The first is his advice on how to grow as a dancer. The second video is his performance at the Frankie 100 festival show. Hopefully these videos give you some inspiration to try something new on the dance floor!
